Isa Town infrastructure projects underway

Manama, June 19 (BNA): As part of the plan aiming to improve infrastructure in Isa Town, which is the oldest town in the Kingdom since the independence era, the Ministry of Works, Municipalities Affairs & Urban Planning has implemented a bunch of development projects in all sectors; in a bid to achieve sustainability and complement the Government’s vision to provide better services to citizens and residents.
The Ministry’s Undersecretary Eng. Ahmed Al Khayyat explained that the Ministry has implemented a number of development projects in Isa Town; in line with directives from HRH the Prime Minister Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa to develop, maintain and renovate Isa Town. Projects included revamping secondary roads to cope with the residential density in the town, enhance the capacity of those roads and increase traffic safety levels.

The Ministry revamped Avenue 5, which connects Muscat Avenue in the North to Doha Avenue in the South, serves the Traditional Suq Area, the petrol station and Yousif Engineer Health Center, in addition to the nearby residential blocks. Works comprised of re-constructing and revamping Avenue 5 at a length of 810m with 2 lanes on each direction, organizing the intersections located between internal roads by constructing 2 roundabouts, constructing parking spaces on the sides of the avenue, protecting existing services in coordination with the concerned entities (Electricity, water and sewerage services), implementing ground channels for present and future use and implementing a storm water drainage network. Works also included paving works and creating pedestrian pavements, installing signs and lighting.

The Ministry also revamped Abu Dhabi Avenue; the part located between Estiqlal Highway and Jerusalem Avenue. Works comprises of expanding the avenue into 3 lanes on each direction, installing a pedestrian traffic signal and implementing safety and pedestrian barriers. The project increased safety levels for the schools located on both sides of the avenue.

Al Khayyat also added that the Ministry has worked on the revamp of Algeria Avenue (connecting Blocks 804 & 810), Tunisia Avenue (connecting Blocks 803 & 805 and serving Isa Town Primary School for Boys) and Al Khartoom Avenue (connecting Blocks 804 & 805 and serving Omaima Bint Al No’aman Secondary School for Girls). Revamp work on all 3 avenues comprised of repaving works, protecting existing services (Electricity & water), implementing ground channels for present and future use, implementing a storm water drainage network, lighting, implementing pedestrian pavements, constructing parking spaces and signage.
The Ministry also revamped Beirut Avenue, which serves Isa Town Intermediate School for Girls, Road 702 and other roads in the vicinity. The Ministry also maintained Riyadh Avenue, improved the internal roads in 5 blocks in Isa Town, and is presently revamping other roads in 2 more blocks in the area.
Revamp works also include repaving roads with asphalt, implementing bricks along pavements, implementing drainage system and lighting. Previously, the Ministry installed a traffic signal along the Interchange of Baghdad Avenue with the entrance leading to Isa Town Block. Another traffic signal was also installed along the Interchange of Damascus Avenue and Cairo Avenue.
Al Khayyat added that development works in Isa Town included constructing 830 parking spaces; on the sides of the roads, in residential blocks and near schools, mosques and commercial stores.
As for storm water drainage projects in the area, Al Khayyat stated that since its establishment, Isa Town was not equipped with storm water drainage networks. However, the Ministry has recently put in place a scheme to implement a storm water drainage network that suits the geographical nature of Isa Town; being an internal town far from the coast. 83 locations have been detected, 24 of which have been handled, while 11 locations are in tendering process, 24 locations in the design phase and 27 locations are being studied and inspected.
All roads projects implemented in Isa Town also included implementing storm water drains.
