Assemblywoman Catharine B. Baker (R-San Ramon) voted no on the record-high budget that Assembly and Senate Democrats passed today.
She urged Governor Jerry Brown to reject the plan’s imprudent spending recommendations.
“The budget that was passed today is based upon improbably high, risky estimates, not on responsible financial planning,” Baker said. “It also promotes reckless new spending for ongoing programs we cannot sustain in a downturn.”
“These unsound economic practices threaten our state’s financial stability and our preparedness for the next recession,” Baker added. “I urge Governor Brown to practice fiscal restraint during this year’s budget negotiations
and reject this budget.”
She said that by using unrealistic estimates of $3.2 billion in new state revenue, the newly-passed budget obligates the state to an additional $2.2 billion in new spending, much of which will fund ongoing programs, not one-time spending.
“Rather than focusing spending on priority needs like water infrastructure or school facilities, this budget includes more funding for, and less oversight and accountability on, the high-speed rail project, and redirects highway funding from critical infrastructure projects,” Baker said.
“I am glad to see the inclusion of strong education funding and an increase in Medi-Cal reimbursements to help address the provider shortage California is facing,” she added. “I believe strongly, however, that school funding, water infrastructure and critical transportation needs should be our primary focus. We should make smart long-term investments in these projects and not go on a spending spree that will burden our state and our children.”
