Cyber exercise under way

An exercise under way at the Joint Staff Suffolk Complex is honing how the nation would respond to a major cyber attack against critical infrastructure, says Kathleen Jabs, a spokeswoman for the Department of Defense facility in North Suffolk.

Dubbed Cyber Guard 15, the exercise “highlights the importance of a cyber team approach, realistic cyberspace training, and a persistent training environment for proficiency of cyberspace forces,” Jabs stated in an email.

The major annual event is unique, she said, “because it enables participants to practice actual operations on a closed-network environment in challenging scenarios against an expert adversary.”

Jabs said the exercise is ongoing for about three weeks, with a range of participants “including federal, state, local, public and private entities, working together to protect critical infrastructure.”

She said it’s been held at the Suffolk facility, because it has the training and exercise capabilities to support the event.

“The Joint Staff in Suffolk provides ongoing support and training, to include the use of facilities, to DoD organizations,” she said.
