Bastrop State Park dam repairs could cost $5 million

After a dam in Bastrop State Park’s fishing lake collapsed during Memorial Day flooding, officials estimate repair costs to be about $5 million.

Heavy rainfall led to the failure of the century-old dam, completely washing out what used to be a seven-acre fishing lake. The rushing water washed out a road in Tahitian Village and trees were toppled in its wake. Bastrop State Park — parts of which reopened again on Friday — sustained the brunt of the damage.

The hiking trails, some camping areas and cabins and Park Road 1C to Alum Creek Road remained closed.

Steve Lightfoot, a Texas Parks and Wildlife spokesman, couldn’t give an estimate for when the dam could be repaired, but said he expects it to be a priority when the department identifies infrastructure projects.

Where the money will come from and the details of any potential repair project will be determined by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission, with recommendations from state parks staff and the infrastructure division of the department, Lightfoot said.
