The Council of Bishops of
Methodist Church Nigeria has advised the President-elect, Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd), to tackle Nigeria’s critical infrastructure, especially the refineries, to reduce the rate of importation of fuel and government’s subsidy on petroleum products.
The Prelate of the church, His Eminence, Dr Samuel Uche, gave the advice in a news conference to mark the end of 33rd Council of Bishops of Methodist Church Nigeria conference in Uyo recently.
He said that in the spirit of national reconciliation, Buhari should forgive all those who might have wronged him in the course of electioneering and not witch-hunt any of his opponents.
“The 33rd Council of Bishops of Methodist Church Nigeria congratulates the President-elect, Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, on his victory at the polls.
“In the spirit of national reconciliation, the president-elect should forgive all those who might have wronged him in the course of electioneering.
“He should not engage in witch-hunting of his opponents,” he said.
The prelate also advised the ministers of the gospel, irrespective of denominational affiliation in Nigeria, to recognise and demonstrate that they were above board.
He said that the council condemned merchandising of the gospel in any guise.
According to him, Nigeria‘s rating in corruption index continues to be a source of concern as the country slides down everyday.
He, therefore, called on the government to intensify effort to fight corruption in every sphere of national life.
“It has become public knowledge that developmental projects in Nigeria do not match the amount budgeted for the purpose, a development the council traced to corruption in public sector of the economy,’’ he said.
Uche noted that that there was no way the country could make progress if money budgeted for developmental projects were not utilised for the purpose intended.
He appealed to the three tiers of government to put the interest of the masses above other considerations by fighting corruption to reduce crime.

“The level of crime and violence in our country is made possible by the fact that the youths are left to wander about without any job,” he said.
