Former homeport site gets $103M for Hurricane Sandy damage

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – As a mixed-use development is being constructed on the Stapleton waterfront, more than $100 million is coming its way to repair damage from Hurricane Sandy and make improvements to the vulnerable shorefront.

URL (Urban Ready Life) ® Staten Island is being constructed on the site of the former U.S. Navy homeport and expected to open on Dec. 1.

The mixed-used retail/residential development will include 900 rental housing units, 35,000 square feet of ground floor retail space, 600 parking spaces and a public plaza.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) allocated $103 million for a resiliency and repair project there, according to a joint announcement Thursday from Sens. Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, Rep. Daniel Donovan and Mayor Bill de Blasio.

“This investment will help the city and community continue transforming the underutilized homeport into an economic and housing hub,” Donovan said in a statement. “It’s one piece of the North Shore’s larger revitalization.” For the full article click here
