CFB Borden receives $22.5M for infrastructure upgrades

CFB BORDEN – The federal government has announced new funding to improve and expand Canadian Forces Base Borden’s infrastructure.

Julian Fantino, the Associate Minister of National Defence, announced today (May 11) that CFB Borden is receiving $22.5 million to improve and upgrade military quarters, renovate military housing, and build a new Ammunition Transit Facility.

“This investment not only helps the men and women of the Canadian Armed Forces operate more effectively, but also represents a significant boost for the local economy and job creation in the Simcoe County area. Our government is committed to ensuring Canada’s military has the tools they need to defend Canadians at home and abroad,” said Fantino in a statement.

Currently, ammunition staging, inspection and distribution are handled in two separate buildings that do not provide adequate space.

Construction of a $12.5-million Ammunition Transit Facility will start this year. It will allow the Base to simultaneously process inbound and outbound shipments of ammunition.

The government is also injecting $6 million to renovate and recapitalize (a whole house renovation) military housing units on base.

An additional $4 million will be used to upgrade CFB Borden’s military quarters.

Work on the housing upgrades is expected to start this spring and be completed by 2017.
