Cobourg to receive funding for Midtown Creek flood detention pond

COBOURG — The likelihood of flooding from Midtown Creek in Cobourg is about to be reduced, thanks to a new flood detention pond to be constructed through the Small Communities Fund.

Announcing the funding on June 25 while standing near the creek at Canada Pallet, Northumberland-Quinte West MP Rick Norlock said the project will include the construction of a new stormwater management pond and a new concrete outlet structure, designed to control the release of water on Midtown Creek and which will contain and treat stormwater and provide flood protection.

“We are pleased to invest in projects like the Midtown Creek flood detention pond that will benefit our community by improving much-needed local infrastructure,” he said.

Approved under the Small Communities Fund, the project will see the federal government, Province and Town of Cobourg each provide up to $416,666, for a total cost estimated at $1.25 million.

“This joint funding will finally allow Cobourg to move forward with a critical infrastructure project that we’ve needed for quite some time,” said Cobourg Mayor Gil Brocanier. “The creation of the Midtown Creek flood detention pond will bring great security and safety to a number of residents in the area.”

The $1 billion Small Communities Fund provides funding for priority public infrastructure projects that deliver on local needs, with matching funding from Canada and Ontario of $272 million each to support projects in communities with fewer than 100,000 residents.

According to Northumberland-Quinte West MPP Lou Rinaldi, this project is part of the largest infrastructure investment in Ontario’s history, with more than $130 billion being allocated over 10 years.

“It will create more than 110,000 jobs per year on average in construction and related industries, and support projects such as roads, bridges, transit systems, schools and hospitals across the province,” he said.
