Sunshine Coast misses out on critical road infrastructure funding

Shadow Minister for Main Roads Fiona Simpson has criticised the Palaszczuk Labor Government for failing to provide funding in the state budget for crucial infrastructure to fix the Sunshine Motorway and provide access to the new Sunshine Coast Public University Hospital.

She said that the LNP Government had a $440 million congestion-busting road plan for the Mooloolah River Interchange which would provide essential road infrastructure to make the Sunshine Motorway safer and unlock the bottleneck for Coast residents trying to access the new hospital however the new Labor Government had come up short.

“This Labor Government is failing Sunshine Coast residents who need this dangerous road fixed now and will need better access to this major regional hospital facility when it opens next year,” Ms Simpson said.

“The LNP got the new Sunshine Coast University Public Hospital underway after Labor delayed it by two years. We then put a plan in place to ensure people could access the new hospital – and now it’s all in limbo under the new Government. That’s not good enough. Nobody wins with this uncertainty and delay.”

Ms Simpson said LNP’s plan for the Mooloolah River interchange would provide a new two-lane connection from Kawana Way at Parrearra to the new interchange (Kawana Arterial Road) and duplicate the Sunshine Motorway between Kawana Way and Karawatha Drive at Mountain Creek.

“The LNP plan would create 2,500 jobs during construction and unlock a Sunshine Coast bottleneck,” Ms Simpson said.

“Labor have yet again put the infrastructure needs of one of the fastest growing regions of Queensland on the back-burner instead of providing proper investment in roads and more job opportunities.

“Their budget has been about raiding public servants superannuation and loading up on more debt while putting up costs rather than building more critical infrastructure.”
